Studies on a Nondormant Sunflower Mutant
نویسندگان
چکیده
During the course of greenhouse studies, an unexpected sunflower mutant resulting from an interspecific cross of the wild perennial Helianthus divaricatus with cultivated HA 89 was found. In this mutant, dormancy is not induced in the developing embryo. Instead, developing seeds of the mutant sunflower begin to germinate in the head about 40 days after pollination (Fig. 1). Others have reported seed nondormancy in sunflower as well, but the phenotype in that case was albino, with visibly reduced pigmentation by carotenoids. Analysis showed that a defective ζcarotene desaturase was responsible for the loss of pigmentation (Conti et al, 2004). Because carotenoids are precursors of abscisic acid (ABA), the possibility exists that altered ABA biosynthesis was responsible for nondormancy in the albino mutant. ABA is a known inducer of dormancy in many plants, including sunflower (Le Page-Degivry and Garello, 1990). Although pigmentation appeared normal in our nondormant mutant, we investigated the levels of ABA in the developing seeds of the nondormant mutant at various stages after pollination. In addition, we report the results of in vitro studies on the effect of exposure of excised developing nondormant mutant seeds to ABA.

Abscisic acid content of a nondormant sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) mutant
A sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) mutant was observed in the progeny of a cross between the sunflower cultivar HA 89 and an amphiploid of a H. divaricatus L. × P21 cross that exhibited loss of dormancy induction in the developing embryo. Seeds of this mutant frequently germinate on the head about 40 d after pollination (DAP). In contrast to other nondormant sunflower mutants reported previousl...
متن کاملGenetic variability and identification of markers associated with germination parameters in gamma-irradiation induced mutants of sunflower under water stress condition
The objectives of the present research were to evaluate the variability induced by gamma-irradiation among a population of M8 sunflower mutant lines and to identify molecular markers associated with different seed germination traits. Experiments were carried out under well watered and water-stressed conditions using a randomized blocks design, with three replications. The studied traits consist...
متن کاملTargeted mRNA oxidation regulates sunflower seed dormancy alleviation during dry after-ripening.
After-ripening is the mechanism by which dormant seeds become nondormant during their dry storage after harvest. The absence of free water in mature seeds does not allow detectable metabolism; thus, the processes associated with dormancy release under these conditions are largely unknown. We show here that sunflower (Helianthus annuus) seed alleviation of dormancy during after-ripening is assoc...

Leaves of the xantha mutant of Helianthus annuus have a higher rate of transpiration and a lower diffusive resistance in the light than in the dark. Stomates of this nonphotosynthetic mutant open in the light and close in the dark.Comparative studies of tobacco, xantha mutant, and wild-type sunflower stomatal opening over a range of light intensities in isolated portions of the spectrum reveal ...
متن کاملA STUDY ON ULTRASTRUCTURAL ASPECTS OF SEED DORMANCY IN WILD OATS
The structural differences between dormant and nondormant seeds of wild oats (Avena ludoviciana Durieu) were studied by light and transmission electron microscopy. Radial elongation of scutellum epithelial cells were observed in nondormant seeds after imbibition, compared with dormant seeds in which cells were completely compressed. Ultrastructural differences for example, dilution of cytopla...
